Thyroid Surgery

Thyroid surgery, also known as thyroidectomy, is a surgical procedure performed to remove all or part of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped organ located in the front of the neck, just below the Adam's apple, and plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism and other essential bodily functions by producing thyroid hormones.

There are several reasons why a thyroidectomy may be recommended:

  • Thyroid Cancer: If there are cancerous tumors or nodules present in the thyroid gland, surgery may be necessary to remove them.
  • Hyperthyroidism: In cases of severe hyperthyroidism, where medication or radioactive iodine therapy hasn't been effective, removing part or all of the thyroid gland may be necessary.
  • Large Goiter: A goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland, which can sometimes cause difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking if it becomes too large. Surgery may be required to remove a large goiter.
  • Suspicious Thyroid Nodules: If thyroid nodules are suspicious for cancer or causing symptoms such as difficulty breathing or swallowing, surgery may be recommended.
